The legend of 10x developer

It was the year 2014; Every job posting for a software engineer had a line that said "looking for 10x developer". Some engineering managers debated if 10x developer was a myth or reality, but everyone agreed that having one in the team was a superpower.

Everyone was searching for a Gilfoyle or Dinesh, hoping to find that one person who could single-handedly deliver features at lightning speed, write impeccable code, and solve complex problems with ease.

Looking back, I think 10x developer was someone who could keep up the illusion of productivity. It was 996 wrapped with pride and glory. You would find people who would code for 12-14 hours a day, fueled by caffeine and sheer willpower. Or you would find 10x developers would create the illusion of difficulty, making simple tasks seem complex, thereby justifying their extended hours and intense focus.

The next level of developer productivity is unlocked
Fast forward to 2026, the landscape of software development has undergone a seismic shift. We are in the cusp of probably the most important pivotal moment that we will witness in our lifetime.

As companies burn through billions in cash, one thing remains true - the productivity it has unlocked for some of the developers is unimaginable.

And those who can tame the tools in the brave new world shall keep up the illusion which it now 100x.
